The short answers...

This program uses Javascript and cookies - you may need to adjust your browser settings for it to work or click yes to lots of pop-up questions such as "Allow Blocked Content".

LOG IN - Pick a User Name for yourself, type it into the box and click the button. The computer uses this name to remember your progress next time you use the program.
No need to Log Off, just close the window or enter another User Name.

Progress - An indication of how far you have progressed.
On reaching a progress rating of 100 % you will be given a "completion Code" which can be used to verify this achievement by a knowledgeable third party.

How To Use This Program - After Logging In, Japanese terms will appear in the five text boxes to the left and their English equivalents will be on the right (probably not in the right order!).
Click on the English terms to 'select' them, then Click in the empty boxes next to the (hopefully) corresponding Japanese terms to place your answers. (It is OK to guess or use the same term twice).
When you've finished, click the "Check Answers" button to see which ones are correct.
Next, Click the "Continue" button to try again.

Due to the limitations of the client-side cookies used to store this information user names are both browser and machine specific - if you log on using a different web browser or on a different computer you will be effectively creating or using a different, unique user name.
User information is stored for 65 days after the "check Answers" button was last clicked.

Progress - An indication of how far you have progressed.
It has been designed to measure how you can, demonstrably and repeatedly, get better at correctly selecting the answers. As such, progress will be slow at the beginning before picking up speed, where it will fluctuate more before slowing down again towards the end.

The program works by randomly selecting five Japanese terms and then randomly mixing their five English equivalents. As you get better at correctly identifying the correct answers the ones you get correct more often will be less likely to be selected. Once you have correctly identified every term three times in a row, without making any mistakes thereafter, you will be deemed proficient and the progress rating will reach 100 %.
On reaching a progress rating of 100 % you will be given a "completion Code" which can be used to verify this achievement by a knowledgeable third party.
